SteriShield Delivery System

It is essential that the disinfectants used to remove contamination do not bring contamination into the cleanroom environment.

GMP requires that:

"Disinfectants used in Grade A and B areas should be sterile prior to use"

but it is also important that the integrity of the disinfectant is maintained during use. Validation work in the licensed pharmacy unit of a major UK hospital identified that a standard trigger spray alcohol had been contaminated with fungal spores only eight hours after opening. Our own research has also identified this risk, which must be eliminated.

In response to this need, Shield Medicare – a division of Ecolab – developed the patented SteriShield Delivery System in 1999. It was the first closed trigger spray system, providing all the benefits of a trigger spray while guaranteeing the integrity of the contents for three months. Disinfectants fitted with the SteriShield Delivery System are used in many GMP facilities around the world.

In 2008 the next generation of this award winning system was introduced, incorporating an innovative one-piece design. In 2010 we improved the system further with an ergonomically designed trigger for maximum ease of use and comfort, providing ultimate protection against contamination. The new bottle and trigger combination is available on all Klercide 500 ml and 1.0 L trigger sprays.

Protects the integrity of the contents

Both versions of the SteriShield Delivery System operate on the same principle of a closed system, where the liquid is held inside a bag. The function of the bottle is simply to enclose and protect the liquid within the bag. The possibility of “suck back” associated with conventional trigger sprays, where airborne contamination can enter the liquid, is eliminated.

Advanced security feature in the new version

An innovative one piece design improves the security of the system, as well as reducing the variability of the product.

Fully validated

Both versions of the system have been fully validated under rigorous test conditions to prove that even when filled with liquid nutrient, to encourage the growth of micro-organisms, the contents will remain sterile for 3 months after opening.

The new bottle and trigger combination is the most extensively validated closed trigger system. As well as standard media tests, we have undertaken unique vacuum and particulate testing to prove that the new trigger and bottle combination creates and maintains a closed system. Please ask for the test data.

Cost Effective

The systems allow all the liquid to be dispensed from the bottle so there is no wastage. Both systems have a guaranteed in-use shelf life of at least three months, so there is no need to discard unused product.

Optimum surface coverage

The fully adjustable trigger sprays allow the liquid to be dispensed as either a jet or spray enabling thorough wetting of the surface so that disinfection procedures are effective.

Environmentally friendly

The systems use no propellants so do not require any special disposal procedures.

The Next Generation SteriShield Delivery System is a unique closed trigger spray system incorporated in all 500 ml and 1.0 L Klercide trigger sprays. 4.0 L Klercide 70/30 trigger sprays are fitted with the original patented SteriShield Delivery System.

The unique SteriShield Delivery Systems have been fully and rigorously validated to guarantee the integrity of the contents for at least three months during use. This includes a standard media test, vacuum test and particulate test.

Note that this data cannot be applied to other "closed" trigger spray systems that claim to be identical.

Full details of the test work are available on request.
